Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, located in the heart of San Diego’s Little Italy, has been a spiritual beacon for the community since its establishment. The church's origins date back to December 1921 when Father Sylvester Rabagliati, a young and zealous Italian priest, envisioned a dedicated parish for the growing Italian-Catholic population in San Diego. His Excellency, Bishop John J. Cantwell of the Los Angeles Diocese, appointed Father Rabagliati to lead this initiative.

Founding and Construction

Father Rabagliati's arrival in San Diego marked the beginning of a dedicated effort to unite the Italian community. After identifying the ideal site at the corner of Columbia and Date Streets, he embarked on a fundraising campaign, reaching out to Italian families and other community members. Despite financial challenges, the community’s generosity allowed Father Rabagliati to purchase the property and transform an existing house into a small chapel. However, the limited capacity of this chapel, which seated only 50 people, quickly became insufficient for the growing congregation of over 2,000 members.

Groundbreaking for the new church took place on August 17, 1923, and by Christmas Eve of the same year, the new church was sufficiently completed to hold its first Mass. The formal dedication of Our Lady of the Rosary Church occurred on November 15, 1925, with Bishop Cantwell presiding. Renowned artists like Fausto Tasca and Carlos Romanelli were commissioned to decorate the interior, ensuring the church reflected the rich artistic traditions of Italian churches.

Throughout its history, Our Lady of the Rosary has been a center for the Italian-Catholic community in San Diego, providing a spiritual, social, and cultural hub. The church has hosted various religious societies, such as the Archconfraternity of the Holy Rosary and La Madonna del Lume, which have played significant roles in uniting and supporting the community.

During World War II, the church, under the leadership of subsequent pastors like Father Vito Pilolla, became involved in humanitarian efforts, particularly in supporting war-stricken communities in Italy. The church hall, built adjacent to the church, became a center for social activities, including popular spaghetti dinners, dances, and bazaars, further strengthening the community bonds.

Art and Architecture

The church's interior, adorned with stunning murals and sculptures, has always been a focal point of its charm. In addition to the initial decorations by Tasca and Romanelli, the church has undergone various enhancements over the years. Monsignor Joseph N. Trivisonno, who served as pastor from 1949 to 1969, oversaw significant renovations, including the installation of new stained-glass windows and a beautiful main altar.

In recent decades, the Barnabite Fathers, an order known for its dedication to education and spiritual guidance, have been instrumental in leading the parish. Father Steven Grancini, who served from 1985 until his death in 2011, spearheaded numerous projects, including the establishment of a Pastoral Center and a religious gift shop, as well as the institution of an Adoration Chapel.

The church continues to thrive under the leadership of current pastor Father Joseph M. Tabigue, who has modernized church facilities and fostered community engagement through social media and other modern means. The annual OLR Festa, initiated by Father Steven, remains a highlight, celebrating the parish's rich cultural and religious heritage.
